Iceland is one of my favorite countries to travel to & I absolutely love capturing my experiences there. It was even better getting to show my Wife’s family this place we’ve grown to love so much over the past 5 years. “Gusts From The Highlands” is my 3rd travel piece I’ve had the pleasure of creating there. Bringing along the Leica Q2 was a great addition in the toolkit for shooting the photos you see in this piece. It was fun experimenting with the Sirui anamorphic’s as well. Thanks to my love Christie LaPlant for all the killer drone shots!
'An ode to changing times. What started as an actual conversation with a close friend, the grimmest man I know, blurting the words - 'I love Taylor Swift', left me contemplating about the whys and hows of our Anthropocene. The film chooses a direct & light-hearted approach to contradict the otherwise meta-modern landscape we reside in.'
A few weeks back I had the chance to visit Pyongyang and attend the Mass Games there. This show is by far the most incredible and amazing performance I have ever laid my eyes on. Watch this 4 minute film and you will know why. Only a communist country can pull something like this off I guess. However, I do not want to get involved in politics here, so please do your own research.
Many thanks to Simon Cockerell and Jessica Mader from Koryo Tours ( https://koryogroup.com ) and Ri So Hyang, Kim Sun Mi, Lee Song Hyok, Kim Yong Un from KITC for arranging permissions and making this project possible.
By the way: I did not get paid to shoot this film!

Mass Games can basically be described as a synchronized socialist-realist spectacular, featuring over 100,000 participants in a 90-minute display of gymnastics, dance, acrobatics, and dramatic performance, accompanied by music and other effects, all wrapped in a highly politicized package. Students practiced every day from January onwards. The 90 minute performance is held every evening at 7pm and features the 'largest picture in the world' a giant mosaic of individual students each holding a book whose pages links with their neighbours’ to make up one gigantic scene. When the students turn the pages the scene or individual elements of the scene change, up to 170 pages make up one book.
In August 2007, the Mass Games were recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest gymnastic display with 100,090 participants at the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang. (Source Wikipedia)
After winning every major contest during the 2018 season, Chloe Kim became the top women’s superpipe snowboarder in the world at the age of 17. In what came as a surprise to many, in October of 2019 Chloe released a YouTube video announcing that she would be taking a break from competition that season and attend Princeton University instead. The years of rigorous competition schedules, obligations, training, and more were impacting her mental well-being and left little time for Chloe to discover who she really was, or to determine her own path. “I don’t want anyone to think I’m about to retire or anything like that - that’s not it. I just need some Chloe-time! I need to be a human, I need to be a normal kid for once, because I haven’t been able to do that my whole life. So I just wanted to give myself one year, the first time in seven years, to give myself a break from competing,” said Chloe. Located deep in the Saint Elias mountains where Alaska, British Columbia, and the Yukon converge, there is a place most skiers and snowboarders only dream of visiting. Brought to you by The North Face and Sherpas Cinema, Tsirku is a big-mountain adventure ski film featuring snowboarder Ralph Backstrom and skiers Hadley Hammer and Sam Anthamatten, who set out to tackle the fabled Corrugated spine lines of the Tsirku Glacier.

In September 2017, I stepped up to the starting line of the Run Rabbit Run 100 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, alongside my friend Jayson Sime. The race is a 102.9-mile ultramarathon with 20,000 feet of elevation gain, which is no small feat for a couple of guys who don’t know what they’re doing.

Jayson had talked me into it, and if I were to be completely honest, I’d say we were there to test out his life philosophy, which is basically that you can do anything you dream up, as long as you put in the work and refuse to quit. That ethic has worked for him in almost every other area of life, despite growing up in poverty, one of six children with no father, and dyslexia.

In the six months leading up to the race, we figured since we weren’t naturally talented runners, the best thing we could do is work hard. So we ran 50- to 70-mile weeks all summer, and went through a full range of feelings: fear, regret, sadness, FOMO, hunger, thirst, exhaustion, pain, and joy. And gluttony, which is not a feeling, but what happens after you run 20 or more miles. The chart below is a representation of a training plan for a 100-mile race (but if you’re really looking to train for a 100-mile race, you should find a real training plan online or in a book).

How did the race go? You can watch our film, How to Run 100 Miles, to find out. No spoilers here.
